This manual is catered to journalists, writers, and audio-visual media professionals who tackle issues of gender and sexuality in their material. Therefore, it will be limited to terms and concepts within sexuality commonly addressed in the media. When it comes to gender, the term refers to social roles produced and imposed on men and women. Thus, it is a broad concept which refers to a plethora of terms, meanings, and schools of thought. The scope of this manual does not allow us to go into all of them in details, so we will limit ourselves, when talking about gender, to the themes of women and sexual violence they are subjected to. Similarly, when we speak of sexuality, we can speak of sexual pleasure, practices, expression, and so many more intricate and complex concepts. In this manual, however, we will limit ourselves to media coverage of homosexuality and transgender issues only.

يتوجه هذا الدليل الى الصحافيين/ات والإعلاميين/ات والكتاب الذين يتعاطون بقضايا الجندر والجنسانية، لذا فإنه سيتناول حصراً تفرعات هذه المفاهيم الأكثر شيوعاً في الإعلام والتي تحوز على الحيز الأكبر والأبرز من هذه التغطية. مع ان الجندر هو الأدوار الإجتماعية التي تفرز وتركب لكل من الرجل والمرأة، وبالتالي فهو مصطلح يحتوي معاني ومصطلحات وتيارات كثيرة ويحتاج شرحها تالياً لنساحات لا نملكها هنا، سيركز هذا المجلد على قضايا المرأة والعنف الجنسي ضدها. انا في ما يخص الجنسانية، ومع ان المصطلح يحوي كذلك مفاهيم متعددة كاللذة الجنسية، الممارسات الجنسية، والتعبير الجنسي، وسواها من المفاهيم التي تحتمل الكثير من النقاش، سنتناول في هذا الدليل تغطية الإعلام لمفهومي-حالتي المثلية الجنسية والتحوّل الجنسي، دون سواها.
